HCA Member Show 2021, Welcome to the Big Tent!

60 members entered the show this year from 28 towns and 4 states. We received a wonderful variety of works from Experimental to Classical Realism and everything in between.  Juror Sarah Alexander selected 60 for display in the gallery. She is a Core Artist Member at Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.  Her work is in private collections and has been shown extensively throughout New England, as well as abroad. Sarah's work has been published by North Light Books, and she was recently a featured artist in the NARM Quarterly magazine.

What inspired you to make this work?: My grandchildren are a constant source of inspiration. This rather dreary day at an Audubon site was matched by the children's moods, bored and cranky...that is until the hunt for turtles ensued. It was a natch to memorialize the day.

What inspired you to make this work?: As a portrait artist I wanted to capture the essence of my subject. Working in an oversized scale brings drama and a powerful impact on the viewer. Rachel, my subject is a beautiful accomplished, beautiful soul with maturity and depth, why I wanted to convey. Her obvious beautiful bone structure and porcelain complexion are an artists dream. Her soul has a beauty that transcends her physical beauty. I hoped to capture that in this dramatic size portrait using soft toned paper so it almost whispers while holding your attention with her grace. She is a true inspiration. I shall continue to use her as a model in my art.

What inspired you to make this work?: I love Fauvism. Do you have any idea what I am talking about? It comes from the French word Fauve which means wild beast, like a lion, tiger, or panther. It sounds kind of dangerous, but it might also make you think of warm and intense colors. That's where the word Fauvism comes from; it represents a French art movement from the beginning of the 20th century, where artists used warm and intense colors but also simplified the shapes of the painting. Fauvism was quite an original idea at the time and belongs to a bigger trend toward abstraction. I love this style of painting, and one of my favorites is “ The Talisman” by Paul Serusier. You can easily find it on Google!!! In this painting series I used "The Talisman" as an inspiration and painted using the fauve method - with bold colors and simplified shapes. It was much harder than anticipated, being far out of my comfort zone.

What inspired you to make this work?: I am compelled to photograph women in various situations bringing awareness to their strength, beauty and everyday struggles. Through this I ask the viewer to step inside an alternate reality where societal roles are cast aside and whimsy is apparent, drawing you in. This photograph is from my Mundanity series. It shows how women can still be glamorous and get the job done. It is meant to make the viewer look again.

Dimensions: 24 x 24 x 1
Medium: mixed media
Year created: 2020-21
What inspired you to make this work?: Last summer I started a collage-a-day practice as a "pandemic project". Each collage (4" square) was created quickly using only repurposed, found or handmade materials. As the stack of tiny canvases grew, I noticed patterns and color themes emerging. It was such fun to arrange this particular grouping of cool blue-green collages. They are separate but connected – just like we all are during this time of social distancing!

Dimensions: 20 x 24 x 1
Medium: acrylic on canvas
Year created: 2020
What inspired you to make this work?: My Kindergarten art students often like to draw rainbows and hearts. One day while teaching them, I was thinking about how there are 6 rainbow stripes for the primary and secondary colors and I thought it would be interesting to create 6 hearts within each rainbow band. I also thought that the hearts would need to be colored in rainbow order, alternating per rainbow band. I did all of this, and then, through the painting process, created colors and shapes entering into the bands which wasn't my original intention, but seemed right. I was also thinking about LGBTQ issues as the rainbow is their symbol. Blurring/destructing the edges of the rainbow bands felt like "breaking," just as boundaries inhibiting equality for all must be broken.
